The children in the Burrow have been exploring the space under the archway. This space has always been used to store our outdoor clothes and wellies but is now being developed to provide more space for the children when involved in their free flow child initiated activities. (We managed to cut a large piece of astro turf to fit under the archway to provide a different surface for the children to experience).
The children have enjoyed climbing on the soft play blocks and helping to create different arrangements. We have talked about their movements and encouraged them to find new ways of getting on, moving along and getting off.
The children have also used these blocks to create dens such as a Bear Cave. This has helped the children to engage in some make believe play where they have linked their ideas to our book of the week ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. It’s lovely listening to them as they join in with some of the story words and actions. (We even have a snake from last week’s Gruffalo Story living in an old suitcase to play with!)
The children have enjoyed using the water tray to fill and empty different containers, create moving water wheels and environments for a range of sea creatures. Some children decided to use their water with decorating brushes to paint the gate and the wall. This encouraged them to use their arms and bodies to stretch as they moved and use mathematical language such has high, higher, up, down, and low.
Other children have explored throwing bean bags as high as the sky, jumping into hoops and drawing using chunky chalks to develop their own mark making.
We’re looking forward to developing this area further. If you have any ideas or resources to share with us please let us know.
