Providing children with appropriate support and materials to enable them to develop (further) skills and independence is a key feature of the Foundation Stage and Forest School.
This belief (philosophy) underpins all that we at Free Rangers do.
We all strive for the children to play, share and take care in a happy relaxed setting that builds on their interests and their knowledge gained at home and in each of the rooms.
A (positive, clear) example of how these beliefs and the children’s experiences are built upon was (demonstrated, shown by, at) circle time in the Burrow.
Soraya and the children revisited the rhyme ‘Tommy thumb’. The children will/may have been familiar with this rhyme from The Nest and The Warren and home.
Soraya improvised, adding the words, ‘Children all, children all, where are you?’
The children showed their understanding by responding, without adult prompt, with ‘Here we are, here we are’. They asked to sing it again.
This was a golden moment as the adults and children realised a connection and a shared understanding- a feeling of belonging and of safety.
(It was also a demonstration of recent speech and language training on Keeping communication positive - showing enjoyment with intonation, facial expression and body language.)
The reply ‘Here we are’ links with the Forest school rule which says always tell an adult where you're going and when an adult calls 1,2,3 where are you? The children reply ‘we’re over here’.
Building on these short phrases and feelings of being connected, the children will become more confident and enjoy new experiences and challenges.
