For a couple of weeks now I have been wanting to make some sort of bird feeder, to promote the discussion amongst us all about how we can encourage wildlife in our gardens. I then came across this very toddler friendly idea!
After snack I introduced the children to our bird food which was Cheerios! This cereal never makes it into Val’s kitchen, however it’s great for a threading activity such as this.
Convincing the children we were handling birdied not cereal was challenging, but they listened well and resisted giving the “bird food’ a taste.
All the children sat down in the cabin and made their bird feeders, continuously developingtheir fine motor skills which was great to see. On most of the sessions the children were so engrossed in what they were making that you could hear a pin drop! Their levels of concentration and attention on task were impressive especially given it was quite challenging. I applauded their resilience and determination. Once we made our bird feeders we placed our names on so we didn’t mix them up.
Whilst the children made their bird feeders me or another staff member made one for the Burrow for birds that we see in the paddock. Once we had finished we went to find a tree to place it in, so we were able to go back and check the next day! Luckily the birds had nibbled most of the cheerios during the night ☺
Overall a great week with very happy children taking a bird feeder home with them!
Thanks for reading!
