This week in the Den the children have been using hammers and nails to make holes in pumpkins.
We like to use seasonal vegetables in the foods that we eat, so why not in our creative and exploratory space in the Den! This activity gave us an opportunity to explore the ripe, seasonal vegetable that we have seen in the shops ready for Halloween.
Exploring the pumpkins provided us with provocation for discussion, we talked about the size, shape and colour of the pumpkins and one child suggested that we could make pumpkin soup. Many children shared their experiences of scooping out and decorating their pumpkins at home.
This free play, adult-led activity gave the children the opportunity to use real tools with safety, and practice their control over equipment. When in control of the hammer each child showed great focus and attention towards the activity.
