This week in the Den we have been asking our children to think and predict whether a selection of fruit and vegetables would float or sink? Children made connections with real life experiences, objects that they have encountered during mealtimes, showing curiosity and enjoyment with this hands-on experiment placing the objects into the water and watching what happens.
For some the process alone was enjoyment enough for others there were many questions asked. Why does it float and the other sink? What if I push it down, will it stay there? Without its skin why does it sink? Some used their mark making skills creating a tally chart to record our findings. This activity promoted scientific thinking, predictions, observations, comparison, reasoning, data gathering, experimentation, evaluation, cause and effect. It aided concentration and supported developing language, using descriptive words to express ideas and opinions.
So the next bath time or at the sink pop a banana or an advocado in and watch what happens!
