Since moving our strawberries to their new position in the ‘strawberry bed’ in the Farmhouse Garden, we have been eagerly awaiting the appearance of the delicious, juicy fruits that we have come to expect from our crop. This week we were excited by the sight of the first few fruits turning red and we picked some for our snack in the Den.
Garden strawberries are a hybrid species of the genus Fragaria, which were first grown in France in the late 18th century.
Strawberries interest us as they are a typically British Summer treat. Many of us enjoy them for their sweet taste that accompanies cream, ice cream and other fruits so well, but they also have many health benefits. Strawberries are full of vitamin C, which helps to boost immunity and helps to keep our eyes healthy by protecting them from harmful UV rays. Strawberries provide a good source of antioxidants and anti-cancer properties. An acid found in strawberries prevents the development of cancer cells. Foods full of vitamin C help to keep our skin looking younger, as it is vital for producing collagen that our skin looses as we age. Strawberries help to keep our hearts healthy by lowering cholesterol. Strawberries can also help to reduce inflammation of the joints, which can lead to arthritis and heart disease. Strawberries are classed as a medium source of potassium which is good for regulating blood pressure. Strawberries are fibre rich, low calorie, fat-free and low in sodium. Wow!
The strawberry is a versatile fruit that can be used in fruit salads, cream teas, cakes, jams, smoothies or just enjoyed on their own.
Strawberries are very easy to grow, they can be planted in pots, hanging baskets or directly into the ground. They don’t need protecting over the winter and they send out runners which gives you more strawberries!
So to conclude, we love strawberries!!!
