Once a month in The Den we have a cooking week and this was the week! Val gave us the recipe to make some lovely cranberry Christmas cakes, as we explained to the children what we were going to do they’re little faces lit up with excitement at the idea of being able to bake at nursery.
To begin with, we washed our hands to make sure that they were nice and clean ready to cook. We then went through what ingredients we would need to make them, the children helped to name them; all children knew what most of the ingredients were, excitedly telling the adults that they bake at home when they aren’t at nursery. The children enjoyed measuring out what they needed and putting it into they’re bowls themselves giving them the confidence that they are able to do it on their own with some encouragement from the adult leading the activity.
As the activity went on, the children began to get excited about putting them into the cup cake cases explaining that we couldn’t eat them yet because they weren’t cooked and will make our bellies poorly! We also brought into conversation what we may leave out for Santa and his reindeer on Christmas Eve which sparked some great conversations, some children said they’d be leaving cakes or biscuits others saying they were just leaving carrots and milk for his reindeers, by the end we were all very excited about Christmas!
