This week the children in the Burrow have been introduced to the very first Free Rangers book titled ‘I see, you see’.
We decided to present the book in its own little case together with some photo resources. This made it feel really special and created an air of excitement and anticipation.
On Monday we read through the book in its complete form. The children listened well using their ‘listening ears’. They were continually surprised at the feast of colours presented to their ‘looking eyes’ at the end of each section. We talked about the days of the week and remembered our Burrow days of the week song.
We talked about the different characters in the story - hedgehog, rabbit, badger, squirrel and owl - and noticed that they were celebrated on our Free Rangers T shirts and hoodies. We looked at photographs of these different animals and Nic was inspired to make each character using our cinnamon infused playdough.
We noticed the different shapes that hedgehog saw when looking through his telescope – circle, triangle, rectangle, diamond and square. The Burrow children enjoy looking for shapes in their environment and like to use shape names when they talk about them.
We identified the main settings in the story – the tree, the city, the field and the stream. We noticed a spider hanging from the tree and spontaneously sang ‘Incy Wincy spider’. We created a cityscape using our road mat, blocks and vehicles. We used our new farm (Thank You Gemma) to remember all the different animals that the farmer needs to take care of. We sang ‘Row, row, row your boat’ when we saw the picture of a little boy sitting in his boat and used clay to recreate some of the stream scene.
The end of the story made us think of being on Forest School (something that we love!) playing ‘Follow the leader’. Hedgehog took his friends to his Free Rangers home. When he looked through his telescope he saw a square. The Burrow children shouted ‘A fire! We don’t touch the fire!’ Lauren will be very pleased that the children have remembered this Forest School Rule.
When Hedgehog’s friends entered his home they saw a yummy cake on the table with a pot of tea…Coincidentally one of the Burrow children had a birthday this week and very kindly brought in little birthday cakes for everyone!
