This week in the Burrow we haven’t managed to make our boats for the pond due to unforeseen circumstances but of course we still managed to get out and about around Free Rangers!
Once we had our snack and spoke about our Forest School rules we told the children what their session is going to bring… visiting the horses and farm! There were lots of smiley faces when we told them and some children even said “yes!!!” We then packed up all our belongings and headed off towards the farm.
Instead of walking the children to the farm we asked them where they thought the farm was; half of the children knew which way we had to head whereas some children would’ve sent us the completely opposite way! One little boy even pointed towards Welton and said “that way”.
After we had all walked over to the farm we had time to play in the huge puddle which is located near the big barn, here the children splashed in their wellies and some children linked together through holding hands. We then headed over the greenway to the opposite fields where there were some horses, here the children had time to stroke and pet the horses. A little boy touched the floor and told me “be careful, it’s steep hill” when walking which was great to see him risk assessing and caring for others!
It was nice to see so many confident children around the horses, the children who were not too sure stood back and watched. We had lots of mathematic advantages when visiting the horses; these were counting, colours and height. “How many horses can you see?”, “What colour horse is this one?” etc.
When all the children were satisfied about seeing the horses we started to head back to nursery, walking through the farm and stopping at any advantage to see something new. The children would spot farm machines, bugs, dogs etc which they seemed eager to view. Once we finally arrived at nursery it was time to reflect on what we had seen and tell any of our adults or friends what we could remember.
