Wild at Heart

This week in the Warren, we have been very interested in animals.  We have been going on adventures around the farm both looking at what animals we can find, as well as hunting for blackberries so that we can eat them for snack.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed picking the blackberries with a few disappearing into mouths rather than in to bowls. They were rather tasty. We made sure that we picked the black ones rather than the green and red ones.

A simple Blackberry picking session has the potential to turn into so much more!

We spoke about how the red and green ones will make us poorly if we eat them, as they’re not ready to be picked yet. We then started talking about what foods could be made using blackberries such as crumbles, jams, sauces and cakes.

Once we came back inside, we used various farm animals with black paint and paper to make some animal foot prints. This encouraged the children to think about the various noises each animals makes, as well as looking at the different types of footprints they were left by each animal.

If you would like to get involved at home then why don't you go blackberry picking yourself and make a crumble!

Apple and blackberry Crumble:

900g Bramley apples, peeled and sliced

25g Sugar (to taste)

75g fresh blackberries

6 tbsp water

crumble topping:

225g plain flour

150g soft brown sugar

75g butter (room temp)

Cook apples and blackberries until soft and fluffy. spoon in to a pie dish then cover with the crumble mix. To make the crumble mix, Rub butter in to the flour until breadcrumb consistency. Add sugar then sprinkle on top of the fruit. Bake for around 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.

Happy cooking!
