Well as you may have guessed looking into the Burrow this week that we are celebrating Chinese New Year and if you didn’t know it’s the year of the monkey! The children have really got involved in our set activities especially on Forest School.
For a couple of weeks we have been doing ‘hunts’ through the paddock, first we had a penguin hunt and then we used arrows to find the penguin. The children have seemed so intrigued by searching and investigating that we decided to carry this on for another week. So with it being Chinese New Year we decided to find a monkey this week.
After our snack we told the children that the monkey had escaped from the Burrow and was hiding in the paddock, what a cheeky monkey! We showed the children where the first arrow was and started the activity from here. With some groups of children we were able to stand back and allow them to follow the route, others we had to guide and support.
When we had found each arrow it really was exciting, “I’ve found it” a child would shout. This really showed that the children understood the feeling of excitement and satisfaction. Before long we were staring right at the monkey, we had found him!! The children ran over to the monkey and would tell me over and over that they had found it. It was a battery operated monkey which we were able to watch as he rolled around laughing.
What a lovely week to spend celebrating Chinese New Year and we are very fortunate to have to opportunity to even celebrate this outside!
