Soraya’s recent blog post had filled you all in about our recent “story making” story, We’re going on a penguin hunt and over the past few weeks we’ve been getting very creative in the Burrow.

We decided to use our feet to create our own penguins. We moved all the tables and furniture aside in the burrow, took off our shoes and socks and got painty! With some adult help and supervision, the children stood in the paint, once they were ready and feeling balanced they walked along some paper creating lots of penguins! (I apologise if your child/ren came home with black feet, I did try to wash them, promise!)

We’ve also been creating lots of blue and white pictures. Using a whole range of materials from, painting with cotton buds, sponges, cotton wool, paintbrushes and our fingertips, which of course turned into hand paintings! The paints all mixed together creating lots of different colour effects. We also used our pens and crayons, and of course along the way there has been plenty of glitter! As part of the EYFS, exploring and using media and materials allows children to experiment, this means they will explore patterns, movements and use different tools and techniques.

Throughout our activities the children have spoken about and named their drawings relating to Going on a penguin hunt, there has been talk of drawing “ice caves where the daddy penguin is hiding” and “the iceberg in the sea”. When we have been exploring our white sparkly play dough, one of our burrowers created lots of little balls and crumbled them around the table, when I asked her what she was doing her reply was “It’s a blizzard”.

After our penguin prints had dried and I cut around them. We gave the children a cotton bud, with a pot of PVA glue, some googly eyes, a beak and some glitter. Each child individually glued the eyes on, then the beak and sprinkled on some glitter – and ta da! Our penguins had been created.
