Last week in the Warren, the children loved finding fruit for our hungry caterpillar, which we have in our room. We decided to carry on with this topic but make some changes for this week’s forest school sessions, to keep the children engaged. Instead of finding fruit, we have now been finding the hungry caterpillar, some caterpillar friends that he can play with.
Firstly we put our waterproofs, coats and wellies on, then headed out to the paddock. We climbed up the log steps or the ladder to sit in the tree house and listen to “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. The children have been showing a lot of interest in this book and enjoy talking about the different foods that the caterpillar eats. Once we had read the book, we then talked about finding some friends for our caterpillar so that he can play with them. As we were climbing down from the tree house, we found our first caterpillar friend by the ladder. We talked about how the caterpillar had yellow and black spots.
We then carried on around the paddock and came to the Willow tunnels. The children began to go in and out of the tunnels and we found our next caterpillar friend.
We then had one more caterpillar to find, so we walked around the orchard to see if there was one hiding amongst the trees. As we were walking around, we found that there was lots of long grass that we needed to walk through, this was a little bit challenging for the little ones but they seemed to keep going and took it in their stride. We couldn’t find a caterpillar in the orchard so we decided to try another place… the mud hill!
Once we had got to the mud hill the children had a go at climbing to the top, although it was very slippery! When we had climbed to the top we found our last caterpillar friend hiding at the very top! We then talked about the colours of this caterpillar. To get down from the mud hill we sat on our bottoms and then slid down the mud slide, the children found this a lot of fun!
