At Free Rangers we like to embrace nature and the elements, and often change or add to our plans depending on the weather. For example, the recent cold snap has given us lots of opportunities to observe the change in the environment due to the weather by allowing us to observe the frost and icy patches in our garden. The puddles have been frozen which has added to the excitement when jumping in them and hearing them crack, and the grass and trees took on a different look with their white-grey tones.
One day this week we experienced some really cold-windy weather. Tam had a great idea to make some kites. So we began collecting some resources - string, straws, tape and old plastic bags (all things that you probably have at home should you wish to make kites!). The children had great fun as they ran around the garden feeling the force of the wind pulling their kites. We also used our bubble mixture to blow bubbles and watch them fly in various directions around the garden. Some of us tried to chase them but couldn't keep up as the wind was blowing them away so fast. We were able to watch the trees sway and bend as each gust blew. We noticed the Forest School group having a great time too as Ed and Jess attempted to put up a shelter with a tarpaulin in the paddock. The wind kept catching the tarp' and lifting it up above them, each time we heard the children laugh!
The weather here is so changeable and we encourage children to be out in all weathers, so there are so many opportunities for exploring and experiencing different situations. When given these opportunities children are able to gain a greater understanding of, and learn about, the world around them.
