The May update from the Den

June 25, 2017 Tam

TOPICS:

Seasons - talk of the changes in our environment including weather, wildlife and plants.

Vegetable garden - Changes to our seedlings, noticing changes to plants and caring for them. Read our blog post here...

Sun safety - Explaining why we need to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Children are encouraged to put their suncream on independently becoming aware of their bodies and how to care for themselves.

Physical Challenges - The introduction of the new climbing frame has seen children moving in different ways, risk assessing and building their confidence with movement.

BOOKS/SONGS/GROUPWORK:

BOOKS:

Friend Bear

Eddie's in for the surprise of his life when he discovers that his teddy bear has grown much too big to cuddle but there's fun in store when Eddie meets up with a real bear who has just the opposite problem. This is a rhyming story packed with humour which the children loved.

Harry and the dinosaurs go to school

It's Harry's first day at school. He and his dinosaurs are very excited and perhaps a little bit nervous. But when Harry's dinosaur friends don't join him in the classroom, Harry's not so sure he's going to like school, but the dinosaurs come to the rescue and Harry and his new friend learn just how much fun school can really be! This book tackles first day nerves offering opportunities to voice children's concerns.

SONGS:

English Country Garden, Nuts In May, Underneath The Spreading Chestnut Tree to name a few! Our songs link with our environment and introduces children to the names of different flora and fauna.

GROUPWORK:

The ribbon game - A child is in charge holding a set of colourful ribbons with the rest of the group each holding a ribbon each. The child in charge gives an instruction and the children follow it. For example, red stand up, blue turn around.

It's a traditional children's game often played in May and has links to May-pole dancing.

Mathematical shape tiles. Children are invited to use mathematical shape tiles to construct pictures. The use of shape names and descriptive language was encouraged throughout the activity.

Infant and nursery school: Children have been encouraged to sit in school groups during snack and lunch times. This includes the non-school leavers sitting together to help with the understanding of the up and coming changes. Enabling children to express concerns and alleviate worries by having a clear picture of what is to come.

UP AND COMING EVENTS/THEMES FOR THE FOLLOWING MONTH:

Health and wellbeing: How to look after yourself in the hotter weather.

School readiness: Encouraging independence, reassuring and increasing confidence.

STAY AND PLAY DATES!
