When a cardboard box turns into…a pirate ship!

July 29, 2015 Nicola Gass

We are still in full swing of our pirate bonanza in the Burrow and over the past couple of weeks we have gone 2D!

We used some cardboard boxes which we started to decorate using paint brushes and sponges as the main walls of our ship, however before long the shoes and socks were off and our feet were dunked in the paint trays (we were also having a little boogie to the Grease CD at the same time – how very pirate!!)

Over the weekend our pirate ship dried and a new week began. I found some left over cardboard, got my creative hat on and cut out a very big helm which was decorated by the burrowers using lots of glitter and tissue paper. I also cut an anchor out of the cardboard too which they decorated with lots of shiny tin foil.

Next job was putting together our pirate ship, we umm-ed and arrrr-ed about how we can make it. Tiff took it in her stride to cut out the main shape of the boat and some windows for us to wave out of. When Tiff had completed her mammoth task, Captain Soraya (who has now perfected her ‘arrrrrrr’) climbed aboard the pirate ship along with some of our Burrow pirates and bobbed along the sea. Although our helm and anchor didn’t fit on our ship, our Burrow pirates still used them with imagination in their play. BH was steering at the helm whilst he was sat aboard his own ship under the arch.

Along the way we have created some eye patches, flags, telescopes, swords, pirate hats and even made our own pirate underpants which you can see hung up on our washing line under the arch.

We created our treasure chests using the egg boxes, which many of our parents gave us (big thanks!), and filled them with sequins, glitter and bits of old tinsel.

Please feel free to come into the Burrow and have a look at the pirate display full of the children’s work.

Thank you for reading

Nic
