In the Warren, we have decided to have a total change around of furniture in order to make the room more engaging for the children.
We quite often have change arounds in our room.
By doing this, the children often become interested and engaged in an area that they might not have been interested in previously. Such as the role play kitchen. Where we have moved it to in the Warren now, a lot of the children are becoming interested in it and are spending rather a lot of time playing and exploring various items such as pots and pans that we have had set out.
We often put out oats in some of the pots, pans and bowls. This encourages the children’s role play techniques. It’s lovely to sit with them and watch as they pretend to mix, eat and cook things such as cakes and pies.
We have also created a larger cosy corner, by moving our large insect rug to the corner and placing more cushions along the wall. There is also a faux fur blanket that the children are welcome to use if they choose to. Some may not decide to and would prefer to sit or lie in the cosy corner reading books or simply just looking at the pictures in the books. Whereas others occasionally use the blanket to cover themselves up whilst looking at the books.
We also have a mark making base where we set out many different activities so that the children can use both their fine motor skills, and gross motor skills so that they can do mark making with purpose. They might be using their fine motor skills in order to make small, gentle movements and marks or maybe gross motor skills to make large, heavy movements and marks.
We set out various mark making activities such as coloured paper or card with crayons and chalks, textured paint with oats mixed in so the children can create their own masterpieces. The pictures they create then go up on to the art wall so that parents, carers and staff can see what their children have been getting up to.
