his week in the Nest we have been focusing our language and using our own words to communicate supported gestures, and we've been practicing our coordination tecniques and we've been using our hands and increasing our skills to use our fingers to lift and also we've been handing books and printed material with interest.

Last week was a big success with our Pirate Ship, so this week we have been focusing on which of our toys float and which ones sink. Before we headed to our location I showed the children two picture cards with writing on, one card said floating and the other said sinking. We then discussed what we could see.

This includes recognising big and small things in meaningful context, developing an awareness of number names through action ryhmes and songs, getting to know and enjoy the Nest's daily routines, has some understanding that things still exist when out of sight.

Brrrr… what a cold week it has been! Last week on Friday we experienced ice - and for some children this may have been the first time they can remember seeing ice. This is when I thought exploring ice and the main factors of winter would be a great opportunity, and it would also link in nicely with our ‘Penguin Hunt’ story which has started in the Burrow.

This week it has been lovely to see our new and old children back after a brilliant Christmas week off; and I can assure you that the children slipped straight back into nursery life with ease. On forest school we have been able to use a bow saw and hand drill this week; for some of the children this is the first encounter they would have had with a saw and drill.

Magical fairies in the paddock
As December arrived in the Burrow so did lots of magic and sparkles, this was a great opportunity to get the children’s imaginations working in the Burrow! I don’t know if you’ve heard about ‘elf on the shelf’, he’s a very special elf that has been sent from Father Christmas to watch over the children.

Over the past 3 weeks the main focus in the Burrow has been fire lighting, looking at all our different components of fire and what we need to build this up. I believe that the children understand the true meaning of a fire and I hope at home you can see this in your children too!

This week has seen us exploring the barn environment at Free Rangers, during the half term Ed has ‘big girls’ and boys’ for holiday club. They tend to use the upper space of the paddock, leaving us with the assault course, mud hill and pond area.

This week the Burrow have been able to explore the pond and it’s natural surroundings. Luckily the weather has been on our side during the week, which has allowed to us venture out with no waterproofs on! However we have needed lots of layers, as it’s been a little chilly in the mornings.
