Last week in the Burrow the children were introduced to clay. We explored what it felt like, smelt like and more importantly how we could make role play marshmallows with it! After seeing the children so engaged and intrigued by the clay I made this week all about the grey sticky and malleable material.

Recently in the Burrow we have been focusing on encouraging the children to be as independent as possible. Whether this is during Forest School, lunch or free flow. All the adults in the Burrow have been working together to facilitate and help the children to increase their independency on task.

Over the past few weeks we have been focussing on our native, nearby bugs and understanding how and why we should be kind to them. This week we have taken our nets to the pond to see what pond life we have in our waters. Before we entered our pond area I discussed with the children our pond rules and what we need to remember to stay safe around water.

At Free Rangers I am the Burrow Forest School Guru but that doesn’t stop me being involved with things the Burrow do whilst I’m out of the room! When I come back I am often greeted in the garden by children asking me to ‘play’ with them and often I think “I wonder how they expect me to play?” shall I be a fireman? Build a train?

Now that the weather is warmer and the April showers have passed we've noticed lots of 'bug' life in the paddock over the past weeks. Which of course meant it's time to do our annual bug hunt to understand bugs and what to expect from them, how they move, how many legs they have and how they change throughout their life cycle.

This week the children and staff have enjoyed making boats and setting sail at the pond. After snack, we shared with the children, our pond rules; always asking the children to discuss these safety reminders, so we can gauge their understanding of these important behavioural expectations and work hard on personal risk assessment and independence.

Before we headed to our location I showed the children two picture cards with writing on, one card said floating and the other said sinking. We then discussed what we could see.

Brrrr… what a cold week it has been! Last week on Friday we experienced ice - and for some children this may have been the first time they can remember seeing ice. This is when I thought exploring ice and the main factors of winter would be a great opportunity, and it would also link in nicely with our ‘Penguin Hunt’ story which has started in the Burrow.

This week it has been lovely to see our new and old children back after a brilliant Christmas week off; and I can assure you that the children slipped straight back into nursery life with ease. On forest school we have been able to use a bow saw and hand drill this week; for some of the children this is the first encounter they would have had with a saw and drill.
